Fitness Friday Friday #11: Leopard + lucy

Image: Coral off the shoulder top (lucy), Grey sports bra (C9 at Target), Black animal print leggings (Onzie), Nike Free Sneakers

Happy Fitness Fashion Friday!  So technically, these are “cheetah” print on my leggings, but “Cheetah + lucy” doesn’t have the same ring as “Leopard + lucy”  so we’re gonna go with the latter.  I’ve officially busted out my long sleeve activewear now that the cold weather is upon us (tear).

I’m headed to NYC this weekend.  Two of my close friends from business school, Matt & Lily-Hayes, are getting married!  I plan to pack this outfit as my “travel wear” for my flight back to Dallas next Monday.

While in NYC, I’m checking out a couple of new fitness studios that have sparked my interest: AKT In Motion (a new dance cardio club that seems really cool) and 305 Fitness (founded by my friend Sadie & just opened a new flagship studio in the West Village).  I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures and write a full review to share here on the blog.  Welp, I guess that’s all for now.  Happy Friday friends!

Loving the detailed animal print & shimmry finish on these leggings
Oh hey off-the-shoulder swag! Holla back at ya Monday morning!

Have a great weekend! Luv, Brit

Butternut Squash Recipes I Love

Happy Thursday my friends.  I hope your week is going well.  It’s freezing cold in Dallas today – WTF!  I’m so not ready for cold weather, boo!  I just finished teaching my usual, back to back cycling classes at BEYOND Pedaling and when I left the studio I felt like my sweat immediately transformed into icicles.

Fortunately, I have no plans this evening so I’m going to curl up at my bachelorette pad and cook a yummy dinner.  I recently had a delicious butternut squash pizza at True Food Kitchen (love that place) which got me in full-on “butternut squash recipe mode.”

Thoroughly enjoyed my butternut squash pizza from True Food Kitchen last weekend!

I bought myself a butternut squash earlier this week and just just chopped it up and roasted it.  The squash I bought is huge, so I can make lots of different dishes. I did some web research and discovered 5 butternut squash recipes that I’m determined to try before the end of the month.  They all look amazing!

Getting ready to scoop this sucker out and chop it up!
My butternut squash, roasting away. Can’t wait to try these tasty recipes!

Nutrition Tip: Not only is this butternut squash delicious,  it’s loaded with anti-oxidants, fiber and Vitamin A (more Vitamin A than pumpkins).  It’s also low in calories (only about 45 per serving) and has no saturated fats or cholesterol.

Have you made any of the dishes below?  Let me know!

5 Butternut Squash Recipes I Love

  1. Baked Cottage Cheese & Almond Butternut Squash from Ripped Recipes
  2. Butternut Squash, Spinach & Goat Cheese Pizza from SELF.com
  3. Butternut Squash Quinoa with Kale, Cranberries, Walnuts and Goat Cheese from Stuck on Sweet
  4. Mashed Cinnamon Squash with Almond Butter from The Scrumptious Pumpkin
  5. Butternut Squash, Carrot & Ginger Soup from with Syle & Grace
Loving Fall – yay for squash!

Washboard Abs Workout

Image: Showing off my “washboard abs” during a styling session at Lorna Jane (love this outfit BTW – I wear it to teach cycling all the time)

Hey hey – happy Workout Wednesday!  As promised, here is your workout of the week – Washboard Abs.  I’m getting floors installed at my studio, Dallas Grit Fitness, today .  Yay!  This is the last major renovation milestone before I can start decorating and, ultimately, teaching classes.  I’ll be hanging out at the studio all day, so I plan to knock out this ab workout while “overseeing” contractors.  Should be good fun.

It’s been a while since I posted an ab workout, so today I’m bringing you my most comprehensive, complete, core exercise routine.  During this workout you will engage your abdominals in 3 different positions: 1) Standing Up 2) On you hands and toes in the plank position 3) In the traditional position, on your back.  This helps ensure we work the complete core for washboard abs!

Warning: This workout takes about 25 minutes to complete.  You can’t rush through it.  BUT, I promise you will feel the burn.  For best results, do this workout 2-3 times per week for 4 weeks along with rigorous cardio workouts.

Give it a whirl and let me know how it goes.  If you have any questions about the exercises below, just post a comment and I can explain.  Have a wonderful Wednesday!  Love, Brit

Black Friday Fitness Gift Ideas – 2014 Holiday Gift Guide

Happy Monday gang!  The holidays are just around the corner – can you believe it?  That means it’s time for my annual Holiday Gift Guide blog post!  I’m super excited about the products that made my list this year.  If you need even more gift ideas, check out last year’s Holiday Gift Picks list and my 2012 list.  I hope you love everything as much as I do – happy shopping!

  1. Living One Love Headbands ($16) – I discovered these headbands at IDEA World fitness convention in August.  I met the owner of the company who personally designs them and she was super sweet.  I like these headbands because they are wide (to cover my giant forehead) and come in TONS of different prints and colors.  I wear one to every single class I teach – highly recommend
  2. 1-yr Membership to Dallas Grit Fitness & Dallas Fit Body Boot Camp ($TBD) – In the spirit of self-promotion, I must include a shameless plug for my new fitness studio opening January 2015! Over the past 3 years, I’ve visited over 100 different fitness studios and reviewed so many classes.  Now, I’m able to offer all of my fav fitness formats and at a single studio – so excited.  We are having a Black Friday/Cyber Monday pre-sale for 1 year memberships. Stay tuned for details! (dallasgritfitness.com)
  3. Lorna Jane Inspirational Sports Bra ($63) – Lorna Jane is another brand that I’ve become a fan of just recently.  Now that I’m 30 and more confident about my body, I rock sports bras and leggings to teach my classes (no shame showing midriff).  Lorna Jane is my go to for sports bras that provide enough overage, support and style to be worn solo as a top.
  4. Nike Free Train Sneakers ($150) – Nike Free sneakers have made my list 3 years in a row – I’m officially an addict.  The reason is that these provide the best support for group fitness classes.  Notice I’m not recommending the Nike Free ‘Run’ sneakers, but rather the training version.   They come in so many super bright colors and styles – perfection.
  5. You are a Badass ($10) – We read this book in my book club last Fall.  It changed my life.  Ladies, if you are trying to make it to the next level in your career, relationship or simply boost your self-confidence, this book will provide the encouragement you need all while making you laugh out loud.  It’s a wonderful affordable gift for your girlfriends.
  6. Lululemon Vinyasa Scarf ($51) – This scarf is everything.  It compliments any outfit and can be worn a variety of ways.  I wore my black vinyasa scarf in a recent Fitness Fashion Friday post, and you seemed to love it as much as I do.  I’ve been searching for the berry/heathered bordeaux (red) color and can’t find it anywhere 🙁  Let me know if you find it.  And if you do, buy it!
  7. Vitamix ($300-$500) – I’ve been wanting a Vitamix for the longest.  I became a fan back when I was doing the Dr. Oz cleanse which required preparing 3 smoothies every day.  I tried to depend on my basic blender, but it took too much time and my smoothies weren’t as smooth as I liked.  I think it’s time to bite the bullet and buy a Vitamix.
  8. Peleton Bike ($1,995) – I’ve always been into cycling, but now that I teach BEYOND Pedaling, I’m really into it.  I just heard about this start-up company in NYC, Peleton, who created this narley home bike that has a live screen to stream classes from your favorite instructors.  How cool is that?  It’s not cheap, so I’ll have to depend on Santa to get this one to me.
  9. Sociologie Wine Pack ($20-40) – First off, how cute is this wine bottle?  The bottle alone is enough to make me want a Sociologie Wine Pack.  Better yet, it comes in 3 refreshing Sangria flavors.  I just tried Socioliogie wine last year and immediately became a fan.  You can buy Sociology at most liquor or wine stores in Texas.  Sorry if you’re out-of-state, Socilologie should be expanding your way soon!
  10. Onzie Two Tone Leggings ($65) – I just got these leggings as sample from the Onzie Winter collection – I’m obsessed.  I’ll show them off on an upcoming Fitness Fashion Friday.  Meanwhile, go get you some.  They are affordable, fit well and look amazing!

What’s on your 2014 holidays wish list?

Dallas Autumn Ball – So Fancy this Fall

Image: Getting ready! Dress & necklace from BCBG

Hey Friends!  Happy Sunday.   I usually don’t post on Sundays, but I had so much fun this weekend I wanted to share a few photos.  My friends and I attended the Dallas Autumn Ball which is a charity gala for young adults.  Long story short, we had a blast.  We started off the night with a group dinner at Dragonfly in Hotel Zaza.  I’m usually really skeptical of hotel restaurants, but surprising our dinner was super yummy AND we got a complimentary bottle of sparking Rose’ – oh hey!

After poppin’ our bubbly – cheers to the night!
Me and my classmate from Harvard Business School, Ade, gettin’ rachet and ready to party!

After dinner, we made our way to the grand ball room of the party!  There was a lovely step & repeat to pose in front – of course I seized the opportunity.

Posing on the red carpet as we made our entrance – oh so glamorous!

When we got inside, we immediately started bustin’ a move because the Emerald City Band was playing live music all night long.  The open bar was icing on the cake, but I didn’t party too hard.  I had to teach spin at 8am the next morning – priorities!

Wouldn’t be a legit night of fun without a duck lips photo

Altogether we had an wonderful night.  Great food, friends and fun all in formal wear – what more can a girl ask for?  Hope you have a wonderful week ahead.  I’ll catch you in the morning!  xoxo, Brit

Loved my dress and necklace from BCBG. Yay for a for a fun-filled, fancy, fall evening!

Fitness Fashion Friday #10: Elegant Athleta Energy

Image: Kelly Green Infinity Scarf (Nordstrom), Black cross back tank (Athleta), Black leggings (TJ Maxx)

Happy Fitness Fashion Friday.  Coming to you today in a simple black ensemble.  I added my kelly green scarf and fuchsia Nars lipstick for little pops of color.  I like this outfit so much I don’t wanna get sweaty in it, hehe.  Maybe I’ll wear it to dinner instead of to the gym.  What do you think?

Precision Running at Equinox: Finally a Fun Treadmill Workout

Happy Hump Day Gang!  A few weeks ago I met Maggie, the General Manager of Equinox Preston Hollow, at a Girl’s Night Out event hosted by Trunk Club Dallas.  Her energy immediately drew me in and next thing I knew I was making plans to come try out one of Equinox’s hottest new group fitness classes.  I had a such a great experience, I wanted to share all the details…

The Class:  Precision Running is the newest group fitness class at Equinox.   It’s a 45-minute treadmill workout with “precisely designed intervals to hit every muscle in your body.”   I’ve read several positive reviews, but I wanted try to the class for myself.  So I grabbed my friend Nena and headed to Equinox!

The Method: The class is built on the Balanced Interval Training Experience (BITE) method, which strikes a middle ground between High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and aerobic endurance training (e.g. long distance jogging). There are varieties of interval routines so you can expect a different 45-minute treadmill workout each class.

The Space:  Unlike most group fitness classes, Precision Running doesn’t take place inside the group fitness classroom.  We were actually on the treadmills in the open gym floor.

The Crowd:  Approximately 15 women and men between the ages of 30-50.  Nena and I attended a 9:30 AM class, which may explain the more mature crowd.  Everyone was dressed in trendy activewear and seemed happy to be there.

The Experience: First off, I have to admit that I hate running on the treadmill.  Though I was excited about trying a new class, I was secretly dreading being on the treadmill for 45 minutes.  Fortunately, I got a pleasant surprise with Precision Running and here’s why…

  • Warm up – As class was bout to start, we hopped onto our treadmills making one long line of class participants.  Our instructor paced back and forth in front of us as we kicked off a slow jog to warm up.  During this time, she coached our running form, breathing and proper foot contact with the treadmill.  The warm up lasted about 3 minutes and then we moved on to the first interval series.
  • Interval Series 1 – For 20 minutes, we jogged, ran and sprinted through a variety of 30 second and 1-minute speed intervals on very low incline.  My endorphins flowed and my heart rate elevated!
  • Interval Series 2 – We got about 3 minutes of transition/recovery time until we started the next interval series.  It also 20 minutes but had more of a “strength” focus.  We continuously increased the treadmill incline but maintained a moderate, steady pace.  I could feel my quads, calves and hamstrings very much engaged as the incline got steeper and steeper.
  • Cool Down – Following the 2nd series, the instructor led us through short cool down jog/walk and then ended the class.  I was impressed with her ability to keep the class lively by simultaneously motivating, coaching and changing up the intervals.

Loved: The number of calories I blasted – 469 at the 43-minute mark.  Woo Hoo!

Hated: I forgot to bring my own headphones so I didn’t have any music to energize my stride.

Intensity Level: Moderate-High intensity.  Fortunately, if you’re still building your fitness, you can run at a slower pace and not feel like a slacker nor stand out from the class.

Afterwards:  Can we say drenched in sweat? About 3 minutes after the class ended, I cooled down and could feel the after burn.  While my leg muscles were tight, surprisingly I didn’t feel knee pain.  I guess running with proper form pays off!

Our instructor taught a 30-minute Dynamic Strength class directly after Precision Running so Nena and I hit that up for some body sculpting action.  It was the perfect compliment to our treadmill workout.  Nena and I were completely exhausted and ready to inhale a yummy lunch.

Final Verdict:  Simply put, if you looking for cardio conditioning, look no further.  I give Precision Running the official “gritty two thumbs up.”  Dallas crew, be sure to check out a class for yourself – hit up Equinox Preston Hollow and ask for Gabby.  ENJOY!

Dallas GRIT Fitness: My 1st Studio – Progress on Site Renovations

Hey guys – happy Tuesday!  So I’m back in Dallas and back to work renovating and preparing for the grand opening of my very 1st fitness studio!  I can’t believe this is all happening.  It’s SO MUCH more work than I anticipated but I’m loving every minute of it.

My studio, Dallas GRIT Fitness, is located in East Dallas at 3821 Ross Avenue.  I’m SO excited to bring the very 1st one-stop-shop for a variety of the most energetic group fitness & yoga classes!  No more having to drop in to 5 different studios to attend your favorite workouts.

Right now, I’m in the thick of of renovations and managing contractors.  We started off by tearing down 6 walls in what use to be a chiropractor’s office.  Talk about manual labor.  I had a little bit of a hiccup last week when the City of Dallas officials stopped by and said I needed an additional permit for the demolition work that was done – YIKES!  We had to stop working for a couple of days until we secured the permit – UGH!  Fortunately, everything is squared away now and we are back in business!

My friend Turner, owner of Dallas Fit Body Bootcamp, did all of the demolition work by himself! Talk about GRIT
Turner knocked down 6 walls on 1 Day #BEASTMODE
During the demolition, the flooring guys came by to give me an estimate on wood floor installation
I almost fainted when I heard the price… maybe I can get wood floors installed barter for classes???
At the end of Day 3 all of the wall were gone and the debris was cleared out. Turner and his buddy Glen literally did magic!

Once we got all of the walls knocked down and cleaned out, we did a mini celebration – YAY!  Then the painters came in and worked their magic.  I decided to go with gray walls and white crown molding.  What do you think?  My biz partner, Tuner, will run Dallas Fit Body Bootcamp in the suite next door.  We’re excited to offer cross-studio memberships and  joint workouts 🙂

Painters doing the final touches on the crown molding
All done with painting yay! Now I need to get a “Dallas GRIT Fitness” sign made to go in the entry way behind the welcome desk

Now that painting is done, the flooring guys will install beautiful maple wood floors this week.

Last but not least, we will wrap up renovations with mirrors, wall art and sound/lighting installations.  Then we are good to go!  I’m having an orientation for all of my rockstar instructors in early December and “soft opening” in late December 2014.  I’ll be sure to keep you updated on the progress.  In the meanwhile, check out the studio website: dallasgritfitnesss.com

So much is happening so fast!

Thanks for being a part of the journey.

Lots of luv, Brit

Southern Charm Weekend in Nashville, TN

Good morning my friends.  I hope your week is off to a wonderful start.  I just got home from my morning spin class at BEYOND Pedaling .  I had to work off the yummy southern food I enjoyed this weekend in Nashville, TN for Leslie’s wedding.   I definitely had my fair share of mac and cheese, fried chicken and Goo Goo Clusters.  This was my first time to visit Nashville, so I was eager to get a true Tenessee experience.

My Southern goodies and snacks in my welcome bag!

Leslie, my BFF, had the most beautiful “Souther Charm” wedding at the historic Bellemeade Plantation. I was bridesmaid along with our other childhood friend, Bethany.  Immediately when we saw each other, we busted out all of our old inside jokes.  I think I laughed more this past weekend than I have all year.  It was like old times – we didn’t miss a beat.

On Friday night we attended a festive welcome dinner at Sambuca in Downtown Nashville.  Afterwards we went out on the town to enjoy the Halloweeen parties.  As a bridesmaid, I had to be the “responsible” one and get the bride home at decent hour so she could be nice and refreshed for her big day.  Mission accomplished – she was gorgeous as you can see!

Me and Leslie (the bride) at the welcome dinner on Friday night and then getting ready for the wedding on Saturday!

There ceremony was inside a beautiful stable lit only by candlelight.  It was so romantic  and intimate.

The beautiful ceremony at BelleMeade Plantation

I was super nervous about giving the maid of honor toast, but I’m happy to report that it went really well.  My friend Lakshmi gave me some helpful tips for for giving a  solid toast so I’ll summarize those pointers and share them with you ladies in case you have any weddings coming up 😉

Me, Leslie and Bethany’s partying it up at the reception

On Sunday we enjoyed a tasty breakfast and a crisp Autumn stroll throughout the Vanderbilt University campus.  Walking through college campuses in the Fall is one of my most favorite things to do in the world – oh academia, I love you!

After we sipped one final mimosa in the hotel lobby, we said our goodbyes and headed to the airport.

I’m still riding high from my wonderful Southern Charm weekend and now I’m looking forward to a great week ahead.  Stay tuned – I’m preparing lots of Fall recipes, workouts and fitness class reviews for the blog this week and next.

Have a wonderful Monday and Happy November!

Luv, Brit
