How to Handle Post-Workout Muscle Soreness

I hope your answer to this question is, “AWESOME!”  While that may be true in the short-term, the day after a tough workout can often be pretty painful – muscle soreness anyone? Sore, achy muscles are a natural part of getting stronger, leaner and fitter.  When we life heavy weights or take on a new workout regimen, we get micro tears in our muscles.  Now don’t worry, these tears are actually beneficial because they force our muscles to rebuild, which burns a lot of calories and increases lean muscles mass.  On the downside, we also feel the aches and pains – not so fun.

The good news is that you can effectively prevent and manage muscles soreness so that you don’t find yourself on the sidelines.  Here are some of my “tried and true” tips for keeping the pain at bay:

  • Keep Moving – Contrary to popular belief, the worse thing you can do is be still.  When we stop moving altogether, our muscles build up lactic acid and get stiff.  Even though you may feel sore after a booty-kickin’ workout, try to do some light cardio the next day to keep blood flowing and prevent stiffness.
  • Eat Bananas – Bananas are full of potassium which prevents muscle soreness and cramping.  Eating 1 banana post-workout will help prevent aches and pains.
  • Stretch – When muscles are repairing, they contract.  Make sure to stretch and lengthen your muscles often.  Fitness experts recommend at least 2 days per week of stretching.  Remember to do dynamic stretching (stretching while moving/light stretching) before your  workouts and static stretching (stretching while being still/deep stretching) ONLY after your workout.  You should NEVER do static/deep stretching before a workout because your muscles are not warmed up and you’re likely over-strain your tendons or pull a muscle.
  • Stay Hydrated – Sufficient hydration is the magic answer to almost all body issues.  Your body needs a lot of water to refuel after a tough workout so make sure your are giving it an adequate supply.  Muscle pain is often a result of dehydration.
  • Ice & Ibuprofen – As a former college basketball player, Ice & Ibuprofen was my ultimate remedy after tough games.    If you experience inflammation after working out, place an ice pack the swollen area and take some Ibuprofen.  Remember, swelling is often a sign of overexertion or injury, so you may want to take it easier next time or consult with your physician if you experience continuous swelling.

Hope this tips are helpful.  Now go get your workout on!  Lots of Luv, Brit

Dr. Oz Weekend Juice Cleanse Confessions

dr oz juice cleanse review

Hey gang! So a few days ago I completed the Dr. Oz & Joe Cross 3-Day Weekend Juice Cleanse. This is the second cleanse I’ve tried this year, and overall, I had pretty positive experience. I only lost 1 pound, but I do feel clean and lean. Here are my confessions…

For starters, this cleanse was A LOT harder than the than the Dr. Oz DRINK cleanse. During the day, I was quite hungry which kind of sucked. As I mentioned in a previous post, juice has hardly any fiber and lots of sugar which triggers hunger. Controlling my hunger during the day was really hard on the first day but got better on the 2nd day. On a positive note, it made me drink more water and realize that I don’t really need that much food to get through the day. It’s crazy how often I eat just because I’m bored, not because I’m really hungry.

On that note, the cleanse allowed for 1 solid food meal for dinner every day. The meal could only consist of fruits and veggies. Unfortunately, I tended to go to overboard on this meal (yikes). I think it was because I was hungry and eagerly anticipating real food. Needless to say, my portions got a little out of control. I probably would have had better results with the cleanse if I ate a smaller dinner and didn’t stretch out my tummy so much.

juice cleanse

Since I was traveling for work and had to buy my juices, I had to be very conscious of choosing “good juices.” Just because a juice is “all natural” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for you. Also, veggie juice is MUCH healthier than fruit juice – it has more fiber and protein and less sugar. If you are interested in doing this juice cleanse, but don’t have the time to go shopping all the time, then it might be a good idea for you to check out something like this Cashcoup site. However, just make sure to double check that the juice will be okay for you and your cleanse. I had to make sure my juice purchases met my 3 criteria:

  1. All natural
  2. No added sugar
  3. Fresh pressed/squeezed (not from concentrate)

Believe it or not, it’s REALLY hard to buy juice off-the-shelf meets this criteria. BUT, I did find one that passed the test and also tastes great. It’s “Sweet Greens” by Evolution fresh – I highly recommend it!

evolution juice

All in all, the juice cleanse was an interesting experience. Will I do it again? Probably not. But I may start substituting fresh pressed juice for a meal every now and then, as it can be a good way to slim down quickly for a big event or something. Have you a done a juice cleanse before? What was it like for you? Please do share your words of wisdom 🙂

Hope you have a great week ahead. Love you tons! xoxo, Brit

To give anything less than your best, is to sacrifice the GIFT

Happy Sunday!  You guys know on Sundays I like to spread a little encouragement/inspiration, so today I want to share something that’s been heavy on my heart = Appreciating and Maximizing the GIFT of Life

the gift grit by brit

What is the “gift’?  That IS the question.  To me the “gift” is the privilege of having a human life.  As humans, unlike any other species, we have the ability to be BE and DO whatever we want.  Why?

  1. Because we have free will
  2. Because we can change

With hard work, can be WHATEVER we want to be and that’s amazing!

  • If we are weak, we can make ourselves  strong.
  • If we are dumb, we can study and become smart.
  • If we are lonely, we can find companions.

The list goes on and on. However, with this amazing “gift,” also comes a huge responsibility.  To me, that responsibility is to promote peace, abundant living and encouragement to others.  The cool thing is that we each fulfill our responsibility in different ways.  For me it’s through sharing fitness.  What is it for you?

While we all have different passions and different ways of encouraging each other, one thing that we have in common is that we have to continuously work REALLY HARD to perfect our craft.  It’s a life-long journey, but it’s so rewarding to know that our lives have a purpose and that we each play a crucial role in helping others live a better life.

As you start your week, I encourage you to think about your “gift.”  Are you making the most of it?  Are you giving your best?

Work hard, dream big, help others! Lots of luv, Brit

10 Minute HIIT Workout

results-or-excuses-GRIT-By-Brit

Hey gang!  Hope your week is off to an EXCELLENT start.   Here’s a 10 minute HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout video that I shot in Central Park NYC.  The workout is intense and efficient!   You need to 2 medium/heavy dumbbells (at least 8 pounds for women and 15 pounds for men).  To get the most out of the workout, do NOT take breaks unless I say so! 🙂

HIIT works because it forces us to push to our highest level of perceived exertion for short periods of time.  This increases our anaerobic threshold, which burns a TON of calories during and AFTER the workout.  Try  the workout for yourself and let me know what you think.  It’s  a great way to get sexy for summer!  #heygurlhey #heyboyhey

GRITTY Circuit Workout – 40 minute Fat Blaster

Hi guys!  So, I’ve been fairly successful so far on my 5 Day FOCUS Diet.  I had one bad night (pad thai w/veggies for dinner) but other than that I’m pretty proud of my discipline to date and am feeling better all ready – yay!  How’s the plan going for youOn another note, a colleague and I have been working out together in the mornings at our hotel gym.  This morning we did an awesome HIIT workout from one of his men’s fitness magazines.  It was very GRITTY so I wanted to create a similar workout to share with you.  Now ladies, don’t be intimidated or turned off.  Just because the workout is intense and was originally designed for men doesn’t mean that it isn’t beneficial for us.  It won’t make us bulky or injure us if done properly.  GRITTY = PRETTY 🙂

Brit’s GRITTY Workout Details

  • Duration: Overall, the workout took us about 40 minutes to complete and we were DRENCHED in sweat by the end (my booty has been sore all day).
  • Calories Burned: ~400-600
  • Equipment: All you need is 2 medium to heavy dumbbells (I used 10 pounds and my male colleague used 15 pounds).
  • Style: High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).  There are 6 circuits and each circuit includes 6 X 1 minute exercise intervals.  The workout nicely combines both strength and cardio training into combination exercises.

5 Day Diet FOCUS Plan

Hey Gang!  So I have a confession to make…

I have been eating TERRIBLY for the past 2 weeks.  Not sure what my problem is, but I’ve developed some nasty habits (i.e. adding croutons to salads, snacking on candy, too many simple carbs for breakfast – sticky buns anyone?)  The fact of the matter is, I’ve been making a lot of excuses to eat crappy food, and the excuses have got to stop – today!

While getting ready for my work week,  I put together this 5 day diet FOCUS plan.  Keep in mind that I’m a vegetarian, so if you are trying the plan for yourself and want to add some lean meat to one of the meals, by all means go for it!

Here’s my game plan for the next 5 days (Monday – Friday).  Each day, my diet will look like this:

  • Breakfast – 1 cup black coffee, 2 cups water, fresh fruit w/Greek yogurt OR w/ all natural peanut butter
  • Min morning snack – 1 serving of nuts or trail mix, 1 large glass of water
  • Lunch – Large veggie salad with oil/vinegar dressing (NO croutons, cheese, or meat), 1 large glass of water
  • Afternoon Snack – fresh fruit, 1-2 cups hot green tea
  • Dinner – 1 serving vegetarian protein (black beans, humus, lentils, etc.), 2 servings of veggies

I’ll be tweeting my progress all week, so follow me @GRITbyBrit – wish me luck and have wonderful week!

We can always quit…why start now?

the future

Happiest Thursday to you!  I saw this quote on Twitter, “We can always quit, why start now?”   It made me take a step back and reflect on decisions I’m currently facing in my own life.  I gotta be honest….I’m TIRED.  Work is demanding.  Traveling is draining.  In addition to that, the effort it takes to plan my workouts, blog, volunteer and consciously spend time with the people I love, leaves me with very little in my “Energy Budget” at the end of each day.  BUT I’m happy to say that even though it seems like I’m “running on empty” at least I’m still running.  And that, my friends, is a blessing!

So, I write this blog post for both selfish and selfless reasons:

  1. I hope it motivates you to keep pushing
  2. I needed to give myself a pep talk 🙂

Have a wonderful day – you got this!

Lots of luv,

Brit

Les Mills GRIT Series – Inside Scoop!

logo_gritseries

Many of you have been asking me my thoughts about the new Les Mills GRIT Series.  Well, I finally got the inside scoop!  Last weekend I passed the official 2-day, super high intensity GRIT module training and will soon become certified Les Mills GRIT coach – holler!

GRIT DFW Coaches

(above – me & the 1st GRIT coaches of Dallas/Fort Worth, TX, USA)

What is it?

Long story short, it’s a small group “CrossFit-like” workout inside of big box gyms…

The GRIT series are 30 minutes HIIT training workouts.  There are 3 types of workouts: 1) Cardio 2) Strength 3) Plyo.   GRIT workout sessions will be offered at select clubs in the United States this year, but have been offered in other countries for a few years now. (see pic below of me getting critiqued while teaching the Plyo workout)picstitch(21)

Now, this isn’t just another group fitness format, this a is  fierce, scientifically proven , athletic training workout targeted to people with lots of mental GRIT or to those want to develop more GRIT – a workout after my own heart 🙂  The sessions are capped to about 15-20 participants and they are done in private sections of fitness clubs.  It’s more like group personal training rather than group fitness.

Why is it so special?

Besides the special combination of strength, plyo and cardio training, what makes the workout unique is the choreography, super fit GRIT coaches (like me – wink wink)  and the music – the base in the music tracks will PUMP you up – dubstep anyone?

What benefits can I expect to get?

The workout it designed to really challenge you and improve your athletic abilities (i.e. speed, strength, agility, power).  During our training class, we spent several hours learning the science behind the GRIT method and how the workout increases our anaerobic threshold (below – see pic of us studying hard). Because the workout is so hard, it just flat out makes you tough.  The small team environment is also really encouraging and uplifting.

picstitch(19)

How many calories will I burn?

Assuming you give your max effort and really push yourself, I estimate that the average person will burn ~500 calories in a 30 min GRIT class. Pretty darn efficient.  In fact, the workout is so intense that only 2 GRIT workouts per week are recommended.

How much is it going to cost me?

Because this is a special workout there is an additional fee, on top of your monthly club fee.  You get what you pay for!

So what’s the real deal, Brit – YAY or NAY?

To keep things 100% honest, I’m not a huge Les Mills fan.  I think the music is usually outdated and the moves are super corny.  I mean have you done that “super man” side skip in Body Attack?  I seriously left the class when we started doing that.  Different strokes for different folks – but just not my style.

HOWEVER!  GRIT is much different.  For 1 the music is MUCH MUCH MUCH better.  Primarily because there’s no 2010 top 40 tracks.  Instead, it’s mostly hard core hip hop and electronic beats that make you feel fierce and strong!  Also, there’s no corny choreography.  All of the moves are athletic drills and power lifting moves set to the strong base beat of the music.  Last but not least, the workout is freaking hard!  You guys know I’m always up for a challenge.  Well this workout actually kicked my butt and took me back to my old college basketball days.  Also, MEN will enjoy this workout because of the sports conditioning, athletic coaches and the tenacity engrained in the workout.

GRIT by Brit verdict = YAY!  Get involved with Les Mills GRIT!

Love Your Body Day #1: Get HATE out of your HEART

love your bod image 3

Happy February!  Today marks the beginning of my “Love Your Body” series.  For each of the next 5 days I’ll share a healthy, body-lovin’ tip.  Our health is essential to our being, so cherish your precious temple of your soul – your BODY!

Lots of luv,

Brit 🙂

Get HATE of out of your HEART

Let the grudge go.  Holding a grudge does NOT cause any pain to the person who hurt you (they couldn’t care less).  Your grudge only causes pain to your body.  Several university studies have proven that holding a grudge is bad for your health.  Joseph Neumann, PhD, a clinical psychologist explains, “When I treated patients with cardiovascular disease, I was struck by how many were bitter, angry, and depressed,” says Neumann. “It clearly affected their health and their ability to heal.”  On the flip side, a study by Harvard Women’s Health Watch found a link between forgiving and improvements in heart rate and blood pressure.

The reality is that life isn’t fair.  People will treat you unfairly, hurt you, cheat you and, on top of that,  get away with it.   But we must CHOOSE to not let our pain or anger ruin all of the good things we have in life.  Eventually, we reap what we sow.  So don’t worry about getting back at that awful person, just let the grudge go!

Love your body today by forgiving and letting old hurts be history #GRIT

Top 10 Tips for a Happier & Healthier 2013

Happy_New_Year

Earlier this year I was talking to my mentor about my passion for fitness and vision to create my own workout DVD (have you bought your copy yet?).   She said to me, “Brittani, in your head it’s just a dream, but on paper it’s a goal and therefore a responsibility.”   Since then, I made a habit of typing up my personal goals, printing them and taping them above my desk.  The past few days I’ve been drafting my 2013 goals.  Below are just my “fitness/health” goals, but I also set goals for my spirituality, career, relationships and finances…

My Top 5 Fitness Goals for 2013

While setting my 2013 goals, I started reflecting on some key lessons I learned in 2012 which have very much influenced my new goals and outlook on 2013.  I’ve turned these lessons into “tips” which I wanted to share with you.  I hope these wise words help you as much as they’ve helped me.  Those who are closest to me know that I LOVE to be inspired and am walking vat of “1-liners” and inspirational quotes.  So, I’ve made a point to scatter in many of my favorite quotes in this blog post.

Brit’s Top 10 Tips for Your Best Year Yet

  1. Strive for EXCELLENCE not PERFECTION – My weight loss journey taught me a lot about striving for “perfection” and the damage it disappointment it causes.  Life is about balance.  It’s not all or nothing.  Whether your New Year’s resolution is to lose weight, save money or run a marathon,  you must be realistic about your human nature.  The fact of the matter is that YOU WILL SLIP UP.  You will have a day that you spend too much money, eat too much or miss your workout.  However, your “slip ups” do not define who you are.  Your determination to get back on track and keep pushing toward your goal is what makes you EXCELLENT.  That’s #GRIT
  2. Set HIGHER GOALS – “You’re stronger than you think you are.”  This is my mantra and the GRIT by Brit tagline.  It rolls off the tongue so easily, but it can be so hard to believe at times.  In 2012 I started to realize that I am capable of doing things far beyond my imagination and, guess what,  so are you!  We are powerful beyond measure, but our self-doubt and fear of failure limit us.  This year I’m going to take more risks and be willing to look like a fool for the things I believe in the most.   Be on the lookout for amazing things from GRIT by Brit in 2013 😉  “Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” – Les Brown.
  3. Give thanks EVERYDAY – I started keeping a journal in 2012.  On days that didn’t have much write, I just jotted down a list of things that I was grateful for.  It could be anything…great dinner with a friend, good workout, a client presentation that went well, sunshine, clean air, etc.  It didn’t seem like much at the time, but looking back on my 2012 journal entries really shows me how blessed I am.  Having a grateful and joyful spirit creates a self-fulfilling prophesy of more great things.  Like the country church folks say, “When PRAISES go up, BLESSINGS come down!”
  4. SERVE OTHERS to understand your calling –  This year I realized my “calling” (or one of them at least).  To  me, our calling manifests itself when we are able to help others by doing something that we are naturally good at and super enthusiastic about.  Teaching fitness classes allows me to do just this.  Challenge yourself this year to find that thing that allows you serve others and makes you tick.  “Helping others is the way we help ourselves.”   -Oprah
  5. Invest in PEOPLE not in PRAISES –  Many times this year I would find myself getting anxious about how many Facebook likes I had, DVDs I sold or positive reviews I got on Amazon.  The fact of the matter is that these “praises” come and go and do NOT create sustaining joy.  What really satisfies us deep down in our souls is knowing that we have truly made a positive impact in someone else’s life.  When I get emails from blog readers or students in my kickboxing classes that express how I was able to help them lose 20 pounds or have more self-confidence, it is the greatest joy and feeling of success! “The greatest success we’ll ever know is helping others succeed and grow.”
  6. Learn from SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE – I spent a lot of time with “older” people in 2012 and boy did it serve me well.  We often think that our problems are “unique” and forget that the world has been turning and people have been living for thousands and thousands of years.  Therefore, what we’re going through, someone else has already been through.  Talk to people who are successful and have overcome obstacles.  Their personal stories and words of wisdom are priceless and powerful.
  7. Stay FAR AWAY from chronically down-trodden and negative people –  The harsh reality is that our lives are a direct reflection of the 5 people we associate with the most.  Are you struggling with unemployment, depression, anxiety?  Take a look around you and there’s a very high likelihood that your closest friends and associates are struggling with those exact same issues.  “Misery LOVES company.”  So push yourself this New Year to cut the negative ties and develop some positive ones.
  8. SWEAT EVERY DAY – Exercise is like a free happy pill, so take one.  You guys know that I’m a fitness junkie.  It’s my passion.  But even if you aren’t crazy about working out, it’s so important to make exercise a consistent part of your life.  It increases serotonin, gets endorphins flowing,   reduces your risk for cancer and strengthens your immune system.   The key is to find a workout that you truly enjoy.  So go pop in a new group fitness class, workout video or something else that gets you sweaty.  “Exercise is the cheapest, most effective anti-depressant”… and it makes you sexy 😉
  9. Eat lots of FRUIT & VEGETABLES – This seems so simple, but it can be so hard.  Just keepin’ it 100%.  Managing my weight became SO MUCH easier when I forced myself to eat lots of  fruits and veggies throughout the day.  To start off, I just packed 1 apple and 1 orange in my work bag everyday and made sure I ate them both before 5:00pm.  Processed foods have too many calories and too few nutrients.  When we eat too many of them, we end up hungry and deficient of the nutrients that our bodies need.  We also end up having to exercise twice as much to compensate for the excess calories.  If you are serious about maintaining a healthy weight in 2013, you must increase your fruit and vegetable intake.  “You can’t out exercise a bad diet.”
  10. BE THE PERSON you want to attract –  Where my single ladies at? If you’re like me and pushing 30, you often ask yourself the million dollar question, “When will I get married and have babies?”  I talk to my dad about this all the time and he always tells me to just “enjoy life to the fullest and focus on bettering myself.”  When I turned 16 he wrote me a letter with his top 10 life lessons for me.#1 on the list is to “Keep God at the center of your life” and #2 is to “Choose your mate wisely.”  He says it is the single most important decision I will make in my life.  So don’t worry ladies (and gents).  “Just keep grinding, keep shining and never-never settle!”  The law of attraction says that we will naturally attract positive, loyal, loving partners when we truly inhabit those qualities ourselves.  “We are single for a season and married for a reason.”

So now I leave you with my favorite song to get you “fired up” for the New Year.  Remember, the best is ALWAYS yet to come.  Here’s to 2013, your best year yet!

Be blessed.

Lots of love, Brit 🙂
