SELF Time Makover Program – Making Time to Chill Out

Hello friends!  Happy Monday!  I’m intrigued by SELF Magazine’s 21 Day Time Makeover Program, so I jumped on the bandwagon and I want to share my experience with you guys.  The program requires you to take a short quiz to the find the right time makeover program for your personality type.  As expected, one of the recommendations for my Type A personality is to “chill the eff out.”  As a result, I decided to get more serious about my personal goal to allocate one day per week to just “chill.”  Yep, that’s right, I’m making time to do absolutely nothing.

My recent transition from corporate America to opening my own fitness studio had been SO exciting a but a bit exhausting.  Now I teach up to 13 classes per week and when I’m not teaching I’m doing marketing, training instructors, selling memberships, installing water fountains, cleaning toilets…the list goes on and on.  Here’s a few pics from the studio that we took over the past few days…

Thursday night’s hip hop class was a huge hit! My little sister, Kortani AKA Tootie, is a fierce dance instructor!

Here’s a little video clip of the choreography our clients learned in their first hip hop class.  Not bad huh?

I as so excited that my friend Anna recently moved to Dallas from Boston. We met while she was in high school in Ithaca, NY. I volunteered as a youth leader at Bethel Grove Bible Church while I was in college at Cornell and she was in our youth group. Now she’s all grown up, living in Dallas and engaged! Small world 🙂
My amazing friends have continued to send me pretty flowers and gifts – so blessed to have a strong support network!

While I had a crazy busy grand opening week at the studio, I did however, devote my entire Sunday to just chill (we don’t have Sunday classes at GRIT Fitness yet).  Contrary to popular belief, it was actually a lot harder than I thought…

I started the day by making my coffee and watching a church service online.  It took so much power to not turn on my laptop, but I succeeded.  I then sat on my couch for a bit and folded some clothes until lunch time.  My friend Dan and I enjoyed a fun Sunday brunch at Henderson Tap House and caught up over several mimosas – that was a great decision 🙂

When evening rolled around, I couldn’t help myself so I started analyzing the customer feedback surveys from our first week of classes and outlined enhancements we are going to make at GRIT Fitness this week.  I only spent a couple of hours on this, so I’m still proud of myself as I spent the rest of the day just chillin’ (wink wink).  I hope to do better next Sunday – will keep you posted! xoxo, Brit

Couldn’t help myself, finished the day doing just a little bit of work…I’ll do better next Sunday

If you had a Time Makeover, what would you make time for?

OMG what a week.  I hope you’re doing well.  So I’m officially 2 days away from grand opening my own fitness studio, GRIT Fitness, in Dallas, TX – yay!  If you happen to live in the area or travel here, I really hope you swing by, take a class and give me a hug!  We are having FREE CLASSES all of next week to celebrate our grand opening.  You can CLICK HERE to reserve your spot in Body Sculpt, Turbo Kick, Piyo, Hip Hop, Dance Cardio or Power Flow.

Our launch party is this Saturday (see flyer above) and I’m excited/nervous!  This week has been a bit of an emotional roller coaster ranging from extreme excitement to massive panic attacks.  And on top of that, I’m so behind on blog posts – PLEASE FORGIVE ME!

I figured I’d give you a compete personal update via photos and captions (more workouts to come next week – I PROMISE!)  Here it goes…

I spend most evenings at my studio in one-on-one sessions with my instructors practicing their class formats – it’s so fun and they are so fierce! Here’s me and Kayah after dance cardio
And here’s me and Melissa after practicing Power Flow
The instructors on my team have been kicking’ booty and I’m 100% confident that we’ll have a successful grand opening next week – spots in our free classes are filling up so quickly!
Meanwhile, I fed my entrepreneurial soul by attending a Harvard Business Women’s event during which the founder and CEO of Poo-Pouri shared the story of how she started her business. She now brings in over $30 million in revenue a year and started with only $25K investment – I was inspired..sigh

You should watch this YouTube commercial for Poo-Pouri #hysterical

During the day I spend most of my time preparing for the grand opening.  This week I ordered these cute water bottles for our launch party on Saturday 😉
And got a banner to hang on our building…
I’ve continued to teach 5:45AM & 6:45AM spin classes everything Thursday, and today was no different. While getting up early can be a drag, it sets a positive tone for my day
I played “No Flex Zone” on my playlist today, so me and some of the fellow instructors HAD to take a flexin’ pic after my classes 🙂

Now I’m headed back to the studio (as usual) to stuff swag bags, help my dad set up tables and finishing the final touches in preparation for Saturday.  Say a prayer for me and wish me luck.  I’ll send positive vibes your way as well.

Have a wonderful rest of the week and weekend!  xoxo, Brit

Fitness Fashion Friday #14: Happy New Year & 2014 Favorites

Wow, I can hardly believe that 2014 is coming to an end.  I hope you celebrated a relaxing, fun-filled Christmas with those you love.  I did!  Here’s a fun photo of me and my immediately family after dinner on Christmas Eve (eve).

From left to right: Kortani (sis), Austin (bro), Me, Duane (dad), Kay (mom)

My family and I are actually celebrating Christmas over 4 days.  Our festivities began with family dinner on the day before Christmas Eve and then carried on to the next day during which my parents hosted their annual Christmas Eve party.  We had over 60 friends and family at our house for food, drinks, dancing and singing carols.  It was really fun (and really loud).  Nonetheless, there’s nothing like being with family for the holidays.

On Christmas Day we drove to Tyler, TX to visit my dad’s side of the family and ate another huge Christmas Dinner.  I still have a food baby from all of the pies, ham and sweet potato casserole I’ve inhaled over the past 3 days.  Finally, today we are ending our 4 days of Christmas celebrations with a “family bonding” day at my new fitness studio, GRIT Fitness.  I’ve persuaded my mom, dad, brother and sister to give me 1 day of free labor to help touch-up paint, clean and get the changing room set up.  #winning

OMG – I’m SO ready for the grand opening party on Saturday, Jan. 17th.  If you live in Dallas, you MUST come.  Here’s a link to the Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/900120126707617/

Okay so let me get back on topic: Fitness Fashion Friday!  Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed this new weekly ritual I started this year.  I plan to carry it forward into 2015.  But before I bust out my cool new Winter activewear in the 2015 editions of Fitness Fashion Friday, I want to share a quick recap of my 4 favorites outfits from 2014…

My favorite activewear outfits of 2014! #gritbybrit

Have you discovered any new brands of workouts clothes? If so, please share!

Happy Friday!  I’ll catch up with you next week! xoxo, Brit

Merry Christmas + English Sticky Toffee Pudding Recipe

Hello friends – happy Monday and happy (almost) Christmas.  Before I head out to spend some down-time with my family, I want to take a moment to tell you how much I LOVE YOU!  Writing this blog brings so much joy into my life.  What makes the effort most meaningful is knowing that people actually read what I write and even like it (for the most part).  Thank you for your emails and messages of kind words over the past 2 and half years.  I hope that you have a Merry Christmas filled with good times, great friend and family and yummy food!

On the last note, last night my friend Caroline hosted a FABULOUS holiday dinner.  We devoured a delicious, decadent sticky toffee pudding for the dessert.  I can still feel it melting in my mouth and have been craving more all morning.  So, I searched around for promising British Sticky Toffee Pudding recipe that I could share.  I’m going to attempt to make a batch today and bring it to my family’s Christmas Eve gathering.  It takes only 40 minutes to prepare and serves about 6.  We won’t talk about the calories 🙂

Sticky Toffee Pudding Recipe

by: Elaine Lemm, British and Irish Food Expert

INGREDIENTS
  • 8 oz/225g cooking dates, stoned and chopped small
  • 6 fl oz/175ml boiling water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 oz/ 175g self-raising
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 large, fresh eggs, lightly beaten
  • 3 oz/85g butter , softened, plus extra for greasing
  • 5 oz/140g demerara sugar
  • 2 tbsp black treacle
  • 3 ½ fl oz/100ml milk
  • SAUCE
  • 6 oz /175g light muscovado sugar
  • 2 oz/55g butter , cut into pieces
  • 8 oz/ 225ml heavy/double cream
  • 1 tbsp black treacle

INSTRUCTIONS – to make the cake

  • Preheat the oven to 325°F/160°C/Gas 3
  • Butter 6, 7fl/oz/200ml individual pudding tins or use an 8″ x 8″ x 2 ½” deep (20cm x 20cm x 6.5cm deep) square baking dish and dust lightly with flour.
  • Put the chopped dates into a large glass bowl, cover with boiling water, leave for 20 minutes to swell and soften. Once soft, add the vanilla extract.
  • Sieve the flour and bicarbonate of soda into a large baking bowl.
  • In another baking bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and creamy, don’t worry about grains of sugar, they will melt during cooking.
  • Little by little, add the beaten eggs, mixing really well between additions. Add the treacle and beat well.
  • Using a large metal spoon carefully fold in one third of the flour, then carefully stir in one third of the milk. Repeat until all the flour and milk is used up.
  • Add the chopped dates (including any liquid in the bowl) and stir gently. The pudding mixture will resemble a thick batter.
  • Divide the mixture between the six pudding tins, place on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 20 – 25 mins for individual puddings or 45 – 50 mins for the large square. The cake should be raised and firm to the touch, if not cook a little longer but take care not to burn. Once ready, remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tins for 10 minutes before turning out.

INSTRUCTIONS – to make the sauce (meanwhile)

  • Over a medium heat, melt the butter, sugar and half the cream in a saucepan. Raise the heat slightly and bring to the boil stirring constantly until all the sugar has dissolved. Add the treacle and allow the sauce to bubble for 2 mins. Remove from the heat and leave to cool for 1 minute then stir in the remaining cream.
  • Place a portion of the cake onto warm individual serving dishes, and drizzle generous amounts of sauce over.
  • Serve with custard or ice cream.

Class Pass Review – Living the #SweatyLife

Hola friends!  Hope your day is going well!  I just finished some killer morning workouts thanks to my new ClassPass membership.  I wanted to go hard on my workouts this week because last weekend, my friend Margo threw a wonderful b-day dinner at the Melting Pot Fondue Restaurant and I enjoyed more than my fair share of the chocolate fondue (see below) – no shame in my game.  Work Hard Play Hard – right?

Margo’s b-day dinner at the Melting Pot. The rice krispy treats were off the chain – I’m such a sucker for sweets!

This week I’ll sweat it off at 5 different boutique fitness studio because  ClassPass just launched in Dallas!  Luckily ClassPass offered me a free month to try their all-access membership to boutique fitness studios.  So far so good!  Here’s how it works…

ClassPass allows you to purchase 1 single monthly membership to take classes at the best studios in DFW and attend each studio 3 times a month.  You can also enjoy these perks:

  • Hundreds of classes to choose from, with new studios added weekly.
  • Covers the cost of your classes at the best fitness studios every month.
  • No commitments, cancel anytime. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.

So far, I’ve taken classes at 3 boutique studios – BEYOND 500, Core Power Yoga and We Yogis.  I’ve actually been really impressed with the simplicity of the scheduling and booking process.  It’s really nice to be able to see a holistic schedule of a variety of classes on one single screen (see below).  Also, I had no issues at all once I arrived to the studios to take the class.  They already had all of my info in their systems, so I could just walk in a get to sweat in’!  WARNING – you get charged a hefty fee ($20) if you register for a class and don’t go.  So make sure you can attend all of the classes that you reserve.

The user interface is very intuitive and booking classes is a piece of cake

As icing on the cake, I got to rock this cute ClassPass tank top and tote bag to my sweat session.  I don’t mind showing some love to ClassPass because it’s an amazing service for fitness enthusiasts, like me!  I’m going to hop around to boutique studios regardless, so I’m grateful that ClassPass is now available to help me organize my workout schedule and save me a little money 😉

If you live in Dallas, I encourage you to hop on the Class Pass band wagon!

Thanks ClassPass crew for hooking me up with this cute tank and tote bag!

Enjoy living the #sweatylife ! xoxo, Brit

Simple Kombucha Cocktails for Healthier Holiday Party

I first discovered Kombucha when my co-worker had a huge bottle on his desk and explained to me that he was on a “cleanse.” Immediately I thought, “I’ve gotta get my hands on this stuff.” Three years later, I’m now recommending a way to “re-tox” a detoxifying drink – funny how that works.

Kombucha receives a lot of health buzz due to it digestive cleansing and detoxifying abilities. This fermented sweetened tea is slightly effervescent and tart making it a perfectly refreshing cocktail mixer. Though it may seem counter productive to mix a detoxifying beverage with alcohol, I figure it’s a means of making a healthier holiday cocktail! While Kombucha offers several health benefits, keep in mind that it’s not sugar free. It has about 8 grams of sugar per serving, so don’t over do it.

I recently tried Kombucha Wonder Drink and LOVED all the yummy flavors – prefect cocktail mixers!

Here’s a simple Kombucha cocktail recipe I’m planning to showcase at my upcoming holiday party. If you’re feeling brave, you can make your own Kombucha. Otherwise, you can simply buy it and mix with the ingredients below:

Ingredients:

  • Kombucha (flavor of your choice)
  • Vodka
  • Fresh squeezed lime or lemon juice
  • Ice

Instructions:

Fill a small glass half way with ice. Pour in Kombucha and vodka (whatever ratio suits you). Add a little lemon/lime juice to taste and garish with a lemon slice.   If you are using berry-flavored Kombucha, garnish with berries instead of lemon or limes.

Give it a whirl and let me know how you like!  Happy (healthy) Holidays! xoxo, Brit

Getting Ready for the Grand Opening of my New Fitness Studio – Grit Fitness!

Image: Me (center) and half of my team of fabulous fitness instructors! Photo by Sharee Antoinette Photography

Hi friends – Happy Monday!  First and foremost, my apologies for the lack of blog posts last week.  I’m not a believer in excuses, so I won’t give you any.  I’ll just do better 🙂

On a brighter note, I’m back to frequent blogging now that most of the renovation and employee on-boarding activities at my new studio, GRIT Fitness, are complete!  WOO HOO  Being a full-time entrepreneur is WAY more time consuming than working in corporate America, that’s for sure.  Nonetheless, I wouldn’t trade this life for anything.  I’m so excited to wake up everyday and get after my long to do list.  But before I get to work today, I’ll take a minute and share all of the great progress that was made last week…

Custom wall art & sound responsive lighting installed!

So one thing I’m learning a lot about is obtaining city permits.  UGH!  We finally secured our “green tag” of approval for all of the renovation work that was done in the studio so now we can “legally” open for business.  Our super cool, sound responsive DJ lights were installed last week.  Also, the custom wall art of motivational sayings were hung.  Last we set up the sound system and started blasting some music.  For the first time, I could feel the vibe I’ve been trying to create for my clients.  I can’t wait until the first class on Jan. 19, 2015!

Entry way photo wall filled will images from my classes over the past 3 years! (still missing one pic in the upper left corner. That one is coming soon)

After getting the studio’s interior set up, I started decorating the entry way.  This is a still a work in progress but here’s a sneak peak at the photo wall I’m putting together.  I got these frames at At Home (formal Garden Ridge) for only $9.99 each!  Then I took photos from my piyo and turbo kick classes over the past three years and had them blown up into black & white poster-size prints.  As time progresses, I’m going to add instagram photos from our clients when they post them with hashtag #nogritnopearl – fun huh?  Yesterday a I bought a hot pink bench and some other decor for front desk.  I’ll post pics of that once I finish 🙂

Me and my sister, Kortani our dance cardio instructor, posing for a selfie after orientation.  Hey Girl Hey!

On Friday and Saturday I hosted orientation for my fierce, fabulous crew of instructors.  Starting off, we will be a team of 10 (including me) to teach over 20 classes per week.  We went over the studio policies, “GRIT Etiquette” and had a fun photo shoot.  I’m so grateful work with such a fun, high-energy fit family.

Well, that’s the run down.  I’ll be back later this afternoon with some healthy holiday cocktail recipes.  Until then, HAPPY MONDAY!  xoxo, Brit

Ratchet Running Playlist

Hello Friends! I’m finally home in (freezing cold) Dallas and trying to get back into my regular routine of teaching, blogging and preparing for the grand opening of my new studio, GRIT Fitness!

As I sit at my desk, planning workouts and playlists, I can’t help but think back on the past weekend and let out a sigh of gratitude. I had a such a wonderful time with my family that I just have to share some reflections (and my rachet running playlist)….

After me, my mom and my dad finally arrived in Tampa we picked up my bro in our rental car and headed to Thanksgiving dinner at coaches house.

In case you missed a few posts, I traveled to Tampa, FL on Thanksgiving Day to spend the holiday with my little brother, Austin, who’s on the Varsity Basketball team at the University of Tampa.  Since Austin had a Thanksgiving holiday tournament and wasn’t able to travel home, my fam decided to make the trip to him!  Sadly my younger sister, Kortani,  couldn’t join us because she dances for the Dallas Cowboys and had to perform on Thanksgiving Day. We missed her a lot, but still had a really great time.

Coaches wife, Mary Jo, can throw down! Simply put…I ate well on Thanksgiving Day

Upon our Thursday arrival, we immediately we ate a huge feast with my brother’s basketball team at their coach’s house.  Then on Friday we did some site seeing in Ybor City and St. Petersburg.  I ate a yummy Cuban sandwich and enjoyed a warm stroll through the historic streets.

Ybor City During the day
Having a cocktail in St. Petersburg with mom & dad before Austin’s game. Aren’t they the cutest?!
Enjoying the fire in the perfectly crisp Florida weather!

Later that night we attended Austin’s game in which he had 3 dunks and 4 three pointers – woo hoo! Talk about a proud big sis.  Afterwards, we went out a for a big dinner to celebrate.

The next morning I woke up early and went for a run to help burn off the giant meal I inhaled the night prior.  I was really feeling my playlist – hey girl hey.   I think being at all those basketball games, listening to hip hop, got me in a “rachet” mood.  I was so hyped up during my run!  Here’s my playlist…

Will chilled and shopped for the remainder of the weekend and to wrap up our trip, Austin took us for campus stroll before we caught our flight back to Dallas.  I love college campuses in the Fall.  They’re the best.

Me and my broskie spending some quality time before I headed home
Austin’s dorm, right next to the Tampa Spartans outdoor stadium
Love the historic class room buildings on campus – University of Tampa
Saying cheese on campus, one last time before heading home!

How was your Thanksgiving holiday?  Did you do anything fun with your family?

HAPPY TUESDAY! xoxo, Brit
