All in all I very much enjoyed my holiday…maybe a little too much.  I ate one too many Christmas cupcakes, but boy were they good!  Nevertheless, tomorrow calls for the official start of my 3 Day Post-Christmas CLEANSE.  Below is my diet for the next 3 days.

As for my workouts, I plan to do 1 TurboKick class + 1 PureBarre class every day.  This totals 2 hours of exercise for EACH of the next 3 days (1 hr cardio + 1 hour toning).

P.S.  I’ve only been to 1 PureBarre class so far and I can’t decide if I’m a fan or a hater.  BUT after this detox, I’ll know for sure.  I’ll also write you guys a full review of the workout.

3 Day Post Christmas DETOX Diet

Try it for yourself and let me know how it goes – enjoy 🙂

Black Friday Fitness Gift Picks: My fitness Christmas wish list goes a lil’ somethin’ like this…

1. Workout pass for 10 classes from Fitist

fitist-logo-rateyourburn-sweepstakes--

This pass is actually my dream come true!  There is NOTHING I love more than trying out new group fitness classes.   Fitist basically allows you to buy a package of group fitness passes and use them to go to tons of the TOP fitness studios in your city.  I’m talking Barry’s Boot Camp, FlyWheel, & top tier yoga and Pilates studios, let’s do the list people…get involved.

2. Under Armour Braided Neon Headbands

headbands uaheadbands

My gym buddies at TurboKick in NYC wear these all the time and I think they are super cute.  They instantly make me feel energetic, so I’m determined to get some of my own!

3. Lululemon Sexy Flow & Go Tank

2010 1010 Lululemon Flow and Go Tank Alarming Rear

It’s just hot…enough said…

4. Jade Yoga Mat

jade_fusion_yoga_mats__71688_zoom

I used one of these for the first time during a SHRED class at SLT yoga in NYC.  I loved it because I sweated all over it and it didn’t get slippery.  There’s nothing more annoying and distracting than a slippery yoga mat…ya heard?

5. Raw Protein Powder

RawProtein

My 2013 New Years resolution and personal commitment is to be a full-fledged vegetarian (pray for me).  So I’ll need lots of vegetarian protein supplements to get me through the year.  I heard this one is legit and tasty so I figured I’d give it a try.

6. Champion Long Sleeve Dri-fit Workout Tops

long sleeve target tank

I bought 2 of these randomly from Target over the Thanksgiving holiday and I’m hooked!  They fit super snug and are super cute.  I wear them indoors while working out without getting too hot.  Also, they look really cute with black booty shorts 🙂  You can buy them at Target for about $20 – I want more!

7. Neon Nike Free Train Sneakers

tumblr_m6nngstvjX1r6nhqwo1_1280

I already have 5 pair of these and I’m determine to get number 6.  I like the Nike Free Train instead of the Free Run because I mostly do group fitness classes with a lot of lateral movement and jumping.  The Free Runs don’t give me the support I need.  Also, I love the Free Trainers because they’re comfy AND cool.  Every damn day – JUST DO IT!

8. Nike Pro Leggings

nike pro dry fit tightspDSP1-13302786p275w

I’m a Nike groupie and these bad boys are sexy and WARM.  Living in NYC I can wear these leggings during my workouts and also wear them home without freezing my booty off…a good look.

9. Nalgene Flip Top Water Bottle

NAL_OTG_Hero

I like this water bottle because I can quickly chug water during my workout and pop the cap back on.  The cap is super snug so if I knock the bottle over I don’t have to worry about spillage.  Also, they also come in cool colors and I wanna write my name on one and decorate it with stickers!

10. Champion Neon Sports Bras

Champion - Neon Sports Bras

These are also at Target and hot!  They provide great support and won’t cost you an arm and a leg (about $15).  I like that there are tons of neon colors!   I wear them under a ripped up T-shirt or a solid black or gray workout tank.  I can never have too many!

MAKE SWEAT SEXY @305fitness NYC

You should know by now that I’m a sucker for being INSPIRED.  Anytime I discover a new fitness format or fitness leader who makes me want to work harder, be healthier or simply have more fun, I’m eager to share ASAP.  Well this is certainly the case with Sadie Kurzban (@SadieKurzban) – a girl after my own heart.  Just graduating from Brown University, she took the plunge and started her own fitness company in NYC – 305 Fitness.  This girl has some serious passion, drive and focus.  At the ripe age of 23 she is doing it BIG!  When I was 23…hmmm, let’s not go there 😉

Sadie strives to bring some “Miami Heat” to NYC through her hot, sweaty, sexy 305 fitness workout.  She invited me to attend a class last week, so I wanted to share my experience first hand.

(above) Sadie on the right & @DJBourgeois strikin’ a pose after our sweaty workout

So let me start off by saying that I’m NOT a great dancer.  My little sister is essentially a professional dancer and always teases me about how “stiff” I am.  Going into the 305ftiness workout I was a little self-conscious, not gonna lie.  Fortunately most of the people in the class were girls around my age and all very cool and friendly.  I was able to loosen up pretty quickly because everyone else was so easy going and Sadie did great job of setting a fun and welcoming atmosphere.  Also, the dim lighting and glow sticks let me “escape” to a “Miami” dance club where I had a free reign to bust a move 😉

Here are my hot facts about 305fitness…

  • Duration: about 1 hour
  • Format: Cardio dance workout – Hip Hop, Latin dance & little kick boxing, no resistance training
  • Intensity: Moderate – High; you can control how hard you push but def expect to sweat a lot!
  • Cool Stuff: Dark room with disco ball, glow sticks and live DJ on the 1’s and 2’s – yeah buddy!
  • Venue: Various dance studios and venues around NYC – totally a “pop up” fitness class
  • Price: High – you have to pay $20-30 per class. There’s a Living Social deal running to buy a package of classes.  305 was also featured in Daily Candy so keep your eyes peeled for more deals!
  • Website: http://www.305fitness.com/

Overall, I had a great workout, great time and met some great people.  I highly recommend checking out a class if you’re in NYC and wanna get your sexy, sweaty swag on!

What does GRIT mean to you?

For me, GRIT is all about the fiery commitment towards becoming the best version of yourself that you can be. It’s not about being better than the person next to you on the treadmill or on the sidewalk. GRIT is about pushing your own limits to become the very best you.

What made you pursue a career in fitness?

The best part about my job is that I get to help others reach their goals. I’ve always been fascinated by the magic in connecting with others and coaching them through a challenge. If I weren’t doing this, I think I would be a middle school teacher – it’s such an awkward age and those kids are like play-dough: dying for someone to come in and leave a big impression.

When someone tells me that she lost 40 pounds and kept it off or another person tells me my classes were the only thing that helped them get through a painful breakup, I feel like I’m living my life’s purpose. Being able to stay in shape is an added bonus to my job but what I love most about my work is helping others.

What song always gets you going?

“Heart of a Lion” by Kid Cudi

What exercise makes you feel sexiest and why?

Pushups. I know that sounds ridiculous. But there is something so sexy about a woman doing military style push-ups.

What do you say to motivated when you’re completely exhausted?

I don’t let the debate start because once I do, I know which voice in my head will win (the lazy one!). There are so many reasons to not work out or to not eat right. I try not to give myself a choice by planning ahead. Before going to bed, I lay my sneakers and gym clothes right next to my bed so I don’t give myself an opportunity to have an inner debate. Like Nike says, “Just do it.” Once I go to the gym, I always end up feeling better and it usually gives me a second wind of energy.

Holiday Weight Gain – Keep the pounds at bay on Turkey Day

It’s almost Turkey Day ladies and gents!  While you’re giving thanks and spending time with the people you love  DON’T be like the average American and pack on unneeded pounds – you’re better than that 🙂

Here’s my top 10 list to keep your weight in check on Turkey Day…

  1. Wake up and work out.  I like to think of this as “putting a credit on my account.”  Since I know there will be lots of irresistible food coming my way, I do at least 1 hour of cardio on Thanksgiving morning.  Lots of my NYC and Dallas fitness instructor friends are holding special thanksgiving day classes, so do some research the day before and prepare to attend one!  You can also do the GRIT by Brit Ultimate body burn DVD 😉
  2. Eat breakfast.  It’s natural to want to sleep in on your day off and “save room” for the big Thanksgiving meal, but doing so will make you binge because you are so hungry. Go ahead and eat some oatmeal, fruit or protein in the morning to keep you from inhaling food later on.
  3. Drink up before you eat up. As always, hydration is key on Thanksgiving day and on any day.  Drinking a liter of water before your big Turkey dinner will make you feel full and keep you from over eating.
  4. Fellowship first.  Be sure to chat and spend quality time with your family and loved ones before devouring your food.  Enjoy your total holiday experience  not just your meal.
  5. Be “grateful” without a “plate full.”  Instead of loading up huge servings sizes, go for quality over quantity.   Try small portions of a variety of foods and really savor the taste.
  6. Color is King.  Make sure that your plate is colorful!  These means it should have lots of veggies on it: green beans & sweet potatoes are excellent.  They are full of fiber and nutrients,  will digest easier and satisfy you longer.
  7. Enjoy the rare stuff.  Don’t get full on rolls, chips and dips and other foods you can have every other day of the year.  Instead, enjoy those one-of-a-kind holiday foods.  Eat them slowly and enjoy every bite 🙂
  8. STOP when you’re full.   Keep in mind that your stomach is the size of your fist.  Don’t hurt it and over expand it by simply eating too much.
  9. Enjoy some “tea time.”  Sip hot tea (preferably green tea) after your meal to help aid digestion and also to keep you from going back for seconds out of boredom or convenience.
  10. GIVE THANKS.  Because life is good and a joyful spirit is good for your health!

Wednesday Workout: Sweat, Tone, Sweat!

Good morning everyone!  Here’s your Wednesday Workout.  I tested this bad boy on Monday night and it’s definitely GRIT by Brit worthy.  The workout requires a stationary bike and 2 light hand weights.  The key is to stay on the bike and cycle for the entire duration of the workout.  It takes about 1 hour to complete and you can expect to burn 500-700 calories.  You can also expect to sculpt some lean sexy arms in the process.  Try it out and let me know how it goes.  Lots of luv, Brit 🙂

NEW 4-week challenge: Chi-town shape up w/Lakshmi

I’m kicking off a new 4-week challenge with my friend, Lakshmi.  Ordinarily, I’d give you my usual song and dance about how we became friends, blah blah blah.  But I think a picture is a worth a 1,000 words when it comes to describing our friendship.  So get to know her, check out her diet and exercise plan (maybe even try it for yourself) and check in every week for her progress reports!

Luv, Brit

Our friendship…

Meet Lakshmi a.k.a “Lak-sheezy”

I’m a girl with good intentions, but I am easily swayed off course. I try to work out each day and am able to eat well until the mid-afternoon. Then I find temptation taking over and a handful of miniature chocolates in my hand. I’ve got some major love for starch and sugar – and I need help curbing the cravings.

My goal is to not change in the short-term, but change in the long-term. I want to fix bad habits. It would be amazing if I could drop some lbs. But mostly I just want to get tone, feel confident about my body, and feel some control in my life.

I’m a consultant with unpredictable hours and very last minute travel. I make it a priority to get to the gym. It’s not always possible, but by in large, I’m there 4 – 6 times a week. My hours are long, which makes cooking and planning meals tough.

Help me!

Exercise – I’m a class girl. Unless someone tells me what to do, I will convince myself it’s okay to stop. The meaner the teacher, the better in my world.

Also, I walk to and from work (25 minutes each way) while listening to a live stream of NPR (how yuppie is that?).

As for my diet…

Breakfast – I try to do oatmeal and coffee. Sometimes I do museli with fruit.

Lunch – Salad or sandwich and a diet soda (I know, I know). On a bad day, I add in chips. And chocolate…

Snack – This is where I falter. My company is really good about supplying snacks. No good deed goes unnoticed, so I find myself often in our snack cabinet foraging for sugar and/or salt. Lately our miniature Hershey chocolates have been by downfall.

Dinner – I like starch, especially potatoes. Today I had some leftover gnocchi. Sometimes it’s a frozen dinner. I am tired when I get home from work (usually 8 or 9), so I’m in no mood to cook for one.

Dessert – I will have a tablespoon of PB. Or chocolate covered bananas from Trader Joe’s (4 pieces)

Here are things I don’t like: Running, chicken (it’s a dirty bird), cold meat on salad (unless it’s tuna), pork, ham, lifting weights

Here are things I’m allergic to: Shellfish, walnuts

Here are things I like: Spinning, yoga, potatoes, french macarons

Also, I’m awesome at taking my vitamins everyday.
