Dr. Oz 3 Day Cleanse Confessions

So, I’ve officially completed the Dr. Oz 3 Day Detox.  I personally wanted to try the detox because I’m a new vegetarian (5 months strong) and I’ve noticed that I’ve become sloppy (i.e. eating lots of simple carbs and fewer fruits and veggies).  I’ve actually gained 3 pounds since I’ve become a vegetarian…not a good look.  The Dr. Oz cleanse presented me with a great opportunity to get back on track it because it replaces meals with fruit/veggie drinks for 3 days.  Click here to see the drink recipes.  Overall, I give the Dr. Oz cleanse the “GRIT by Brit 2 thumbs up” and here’s why…

First off, I definitely got my fair share of veggies and fruits.  Each drink consists of at least 3-4 servings of fruits/vegetables (sometimes more than I eat in an entire day).  I feel like a born again vegetarian 🙂  Unlike most cleanses, each drink includes some sort of healthy fat (i.e. avocado, coconut oil, almond butter).   This is really important because my body wasn’t deprived of essential nutrients AND I got an adequate amount of protein.  Since I weight train 2-3 times per week, I HAVE to make sure that my protein intake is sufficient so that my muscles can repair themselves.  I was also really impressed by how tasty each of the drinks are.  I mean, who would guess blending mango, blueberries,  cayenne pepper, avocado and coconut water would actually taste good?

Secondly, in only 3 days I lost 2.2 pounds 🙂  I’m 5’8″ and very muscular but I always try to keep my weight below 153 pounds.  Still 1 more pound to go!

weight loss from cleansing

Also, I developed a new obsession = Epsom Salt and lavender oil baths!  This was HEAVEN IN MY HOME!  Daily soak sessions are a part of the Dr. Oz cleanse.  Not only are they detoxifying, but they are SO relaxing and soothing!  As a group fitness instructor I always have sore muscles and these baths were a perfect remedy for my muscle aches.   I also discovered Dr. Teal’s Epsom + Lavender oil bath soak, so I can buy both ingredients already combined – yes!

Epsom Salt and Lavender

Last, the cleanse has definitely helped me ween off coffee.  I sometimes drink 4 cups a day…not good I know, but at least I’m honest.  After going 3 days without coffee, I’ve realized that I don’t really need it.  The cleanse calls for 1 cup of hot green tea ever morning which gave me a decent caffeine fix.  However,  I was a little groggy on some days without my Cup-a-Joe.  This is something I’ll continue to work on.

Now that the cleanse is over, I’ve decided that this is not going to be a “one time thing” for me.  I really loved the lunch drink, so today I’m having it for dinner before I head to yoga!  I’m going to continue making these smoothies and drinking them as meal replacements every now and then.  It’s an easy and efficient way to ensure I get enough fiber and my fruit/veggie fix.

If you are considering trying the Dr. Oz 3 Day Detox cleanse – I highly recommend it.  Let me know how it goes!

Lots of luv, health & joy to you!

xoxo, Brit

  1. I’m glad to read someone liked the lunch drink ! Is it comparable to the green machine? because thats what i keep telling myself 🙂 I’m starting on Tuesday wish me luck!

    1. Indeed – best of luck of to you – I know you will do awesome. PLEASE share your experience with us 🙂 Best, Brit

    1. No – don’t juice! That defeats the purpose of the cleanse. Bleeding keeps the skin which contains all of the fiber needed for detoxing. Juicing has too much sugar and not enough fiber 🙂

      Best, Brit

  2. What kind of blender worked for you? I think I need a new blender before I try this. Also, when it calls for 1/2 lime, you actually put the entire half lime in, rind and all? Thanks for the info. You have a lot of great information! 🙂

    1. Hey there! I used a GE basic blender – I was surprised how easily the foods will blend. Yes, for the lime, actually included the lime (not just the juice) – it made the lunch drink yummy! Good luck and keep in touch 🙂 Lots of luv, Brit

  3. Glad to have found this blog! How much time did you allot between each step for morning tea and breakfast drink, followed by multivitamin?

    1. Thanks – so glad you like! Not much time actually…had my morning tea right when I woke up and then made my breakfast drink while I was drinking my tea. Drank my breakfast drink about 15-20 minutes after my tea. Took my morning half of my multivitamin around mid morning (so like 10am). Good luck! Lots of luv, Brit

  4. Hi Brit. Just came across your blog since looking up reviews on Dr. Oz’s three day cleanse. My husband and I are going to give it a shot. Glad you liked it. Question for you since you just completed it. The shopping list appears to be for three drinks per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), but you need to figure out which one you like the most so you can have it again for a snack correct? Or is there something I am missing with the “snack drink?” Thanks!

    1. Hey Jenn! So glad you found my blog! In terms of shopping, most of the standard salea portions were more than what is required in the recipe sheet. That said, I had enough stuff left over for my snack drink (my personal fav is the lunch drink). I think that will be the same case for you. But just too be safe, I would just buy a little extra of the produce items, you should have plenty of everything else. I hope this is helpful! Let me know how you and your hubby do on the cleanse 🙂 lots of luv, Brit

  5. Hi Brit,

Checking in from Christchurch New Zealand! After some planning, shopping and several weeks trying to source kale here (finally got it from a farmers market), I have just completed my first day.

Loved the brekkie drink and the dinner one. The lunch one I had to force down. But I didn’t put the half lime in, just the juice, so I’ll change that tomorrow. Also Ive never liked celery so it was a real struggle for me. The others were bigish drinks but the lunch one was huge so I might cut back on the celery tomorrow.

Weighed myself before starting so I’ll let you know how the next couple of days go and if I lose any weight:) Charlene

    1. Great update! Yes – I also found that the lunch drink was very big! I ended up drinking half for lunch and half for my snack drink. Less celery will make the portion smaller. So awesome to hear from our friends on the other side of the globe. I have a special love for those from New Zeland since I’m a huge Body Pump and Les Mills fan 🙂 Hope to hear from you again soo, Charlene! Lots of luv, Brit

      1. Hey again, that’s so funny, Ive never been to Les Mills (Im not a gym person but want to try), and they had a deal on yesterday, two weeks membership for $1. So Im about to give it a try when I finish this detox. Id like to loose 10-15 pounds, Ive got a little soft around the middle lol.

          1. Hi All,

Ive finished my three days and according to the scales Ive lost 1.7kg or 3.75 pounds. It wasn’t easy not to cheat, definitely took some discipline. I didn’t do the green drink on day three because I found it too gross and just couldn’t face it so I made extra of the breakfast drink to see me through. Today the first thing I did was make a cup of green tea and then the breakfast smoothie. I think I’ll keep up a smoothie for breakfast, its a great way to help get your servings of veges and fruit in for the day. Im not going back to eating junk food for as long as I can stand it either, have made sure Ive got fresh veges to steam and terakihi in for dinner. I may do it again next week!

          2. THank you so much for sharing your story with us! Congrats on you success! Keep up the healthy journey 🙂

  6. Thanks for the feedback on the clense. Im going to ty it. How would you recommend I start getting into shape? Im not overweight, but have a belly. I have absolutely no energy or muscles. Help! Your afvice would be appreciated.

  7. Hi Brit
I’d like to do this soon. Do you drink water during the day? And did you go to the bathroom alot

    1. Hey there! Yes I drank a lot of water, almost 2 liters per day. And yes I went to restroom a lot – the cleanse really does clear out your digestive system 😉 good luck!

  8. Hey Brit. Plan to try the detox. Do you know if all of the ingredients are gluten free along with being ok for IBS sufferers

    1. Hi, Brit I signed up for the your blog today and I started the detox today. I have a question. How hard did you workout during your clense? I injured my shoulder pretty bad so I am resting it but I have continued lower body and cardio. Any suggestions on a hurt shoulder?

  9. Hi Brit!
My sister and I started the cleanse today. I came across your blog via google. In your comments above I noticed you said blend every thing. I blended mostly every thing except for the celery and cucumber. I used the juicer for that and added it to the blender. Should I bend those as well?

    1. Hey – good luck on the clease! Yes, you should def blend the clery and cucumber – the skin of the cucumber of full nutrients and fiber. The same goes for the celery. Otherwise, if you juice, you’ll just get mostly watter sense those veggies have really high water content. Fiber is the key element needed to cleanse your body so don’t miss out. Good luck! Lots of luv, Brit

  10. I understand you went to the bathroom a lot, however did you do the cleanse during the week and go to work. I scared to start because I have an hour and half commute to work on a train and afraid I will need a bathroom and afraid that I would be tied down the the public bathroom at work…. How bad is it??!

    1. Hi Bella! Yes, I went to the bathroom a lot but it wasn’t terrible (nothing like taking a laxative). The hour and half commute on the train should be fine. I usually used the bathroom early in the morning before work, and then a couple of time after work in the evening. Don’t worry – everything will be okay! Good luck, luv, Brit

  11. I am about to start this cleanse! Very excited to read your experience because I am in a similar position. I became a vegetarian too and have had the same “mushy” experience. I lose muscle so quickly! I am hoping that especially after the 4th, this cleanse will get me back on track.

    1. Hey Cristina – good luck! The cleanse really is great – I think you will be successful. Please write me back and let me know how it goes. I’m in major “detox mode” after 4th of July weekend myself – 1 too many cupcakes 🙂 Oh well, ready to hit the gym hard this week – enjoy and all the best to you! Luv, Brit

  12. Hey-Thank you for all the great information! I normally work-out about 4 days a week. Did you work-out during the three days? thanks Michelle

    1. Hey Michelle – you are so very welcome! Yes, I worked out during the cleanse. I taught my regular kickboxing and spinning classes without any issues. The drinks have a solid amount of calories to provide fuel for your workouts. Also, I was sure to drink LOTS of water. Good luck and I wish you MUCh success! Lots of luv, Brit

          1. Hey-Well I finished the 3 day detox and am down 5.8 lbs. but more importantly than that, I feel great and have lots of energy. I also feel very motivated to eat clean healthy foods. How often do you recommend the detox? Thanks again for the encouragement!

          2. woo hoo! way to go! As a personal goal, I am going to try to do the detox at the start of every month (so every 25 days or so). I think it’s a good level-set for my body and my mind. We shall see – thanks so much for sharing your progress. Very inspiriing 🙂

      1. Hey Brit-I am on my 2nd day of the detox and feel great! What would you recommend I eat Thursday on my first day of eating solid foods? I normally eat pretty healthy but have gotten sloppy with it the last month or so. This is really going to help me get back on track! Have a great day:)

        1. Woo hoo! Day 2 🙂 So, on day 4, I still had the breakfast drink and then had regular meals for the rest of the day. Lunch was a soup since it’s easy to digest and for dinner I had a salad with beans and chick peas. I felt great. Since the drinks are blended and not juiced, I found that coming back to solid food wasn’t that big of a deal. Good luck – you are half way there! Luv, Brit 🙂

  13. Hey! I started the detox today. Came online to research a few questions I had and found your blog. It is really motivational and informational. Thank you.

    1. Hey KellyAnn! THanks so much for commenting. How was day 1? And thanks for you kind words – blogging really helps me stay on track and there’s know better feeling than knowing that I’m helping others in the process. All the best, keep in touch gurl 🙂

  14. Hi, love your blog! I just started the detox and was looking for feedback from others online and found you. I didn’t know if I would have any energy to workout but I think at least for this day 1, I might be able to survive. I will come back and let you know how I feel after day 3 🙂

    1. Hey Akua – nice to meet ya! Yes, will def have enough energy to workout! Please do come back and share your experience with us. So glad you like my blog – keep in touch 🙂 -Brit

      1. Hi Brit,
Made it through the detox and I feel great! This is my summary for those interested: Grocery list adds up and is expensive, love the breakfast and dinner drinks, lunch drink is ok, fell in love with the epsom and lavender bath, the drinks are so filling that you have enough energy to get through your day and also workout, and I lost 3lbs. I will certainly do this again.

        1. Woo Hoo! way to go Akua – thanks so much for sharing with us. Glad the cleanse went well for you. Please keep in touch – to health and happiness! Luv, Brit 😉

      2. Hi Brit, I’m on Day 2 of the Detox and I’m finding it VERY hard to stick with it. I have very little energy, and I’m finding myself hungry after 30-60 mins of finishing the juices. I normally eat a clean diet with lots of veggies and fruits, and drink plenty of water so I thought this detox would be no problem for me, BOY was I WRONG. I also workout 6 days a week (which Day 1 wasn’t that bad, but I didn’t do any cardio either) and tonight is my leg workout along with cardio, I don’t know if I will have the energy to make it through. Any suggestions? I don’t want to give up on it (I feel like I so close to the end) but I don’t know if I can physically take this feeling any longer. NEEDING SOME MOTIVATION!! Please and thank you!

        1. Hey Alicia! Are you doing the JUICE cleanse (see details here: https://gritbybrit.com/2013/07/14/dr-oz-3-day-weekend-juice-cleanse-challenge/) or the DRINK cleanse. I’m doing the JUICE cleanse right now myself and am also finding it hard 🙁 But the DRINK cleanse is much easier and more filling.. Either way, STICK WITH IT! You don’t want your hard work to go to waste. You’ve already put in so much time, money and effort, GET YOUR REWARD – you got this! Let us know your success story after day 3 – mind over matter 🙂

          1. Hi Brit! I’m doing the “drink” cleanse. Thank you for the extra encouragement!! I managed to make it through Day 2. Today is Day 3 (final day :)) and I must say, I do have more energy today! (funny) I weighed myself this morning for kicks and I’m down 5lbs!! As exciting has that sounds I wasn’t really expecting to lose that much, nonetheless, I’m so excited!! Now if I can just keep it off or build muscle in place of it… that’s the HARD part 🙂

Thanks again! Good luck to you on you healthy journey as well!

  15. 2 days in! Day 1 was hard – I was SO hungry the whole day and felt gross after drinking the lunch shake. I can’t believe that’s your favorite!! Today, since I didn’t think I could stomach the texture of the lunch – I chopped up the 1/2 apple, cup of pineapple, and celery and ate that raw. Then I very lightly steamed the kale and ate it that way. Lastly, I combined coconut oil, coconut water, cucumber, and lime in a food processor and drank that! I am just missing the almond milk but figured thats ok! I just wanted to post this in case anyone else found the lunch drink gag worthy :). It was also nice to chew!! Love the breakfast and dinner shakes and can definitely keep drinking those.

    Happy cleansing!

    1. hahaha – nice! way to be creative! I think as long as your still consume the raw ingredients it’s okay….I really love the lunch drink, too funny. The dinner drink on the other hand, not so much. Good luck on day 3, stay strong – you are almost there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! luv, Brit

  16. Hi there! So glad to have found your blog…….was researching feedback on the Dr. Oz 3 day cleanse. I am a kidney transplant recipient who has gained 50 lbs since transplantation. I am 5’10 and currently weigh 215 lbs (my previous weight was 165 lbs)!!!! I’ve tried many times to lose weight through crash diets, walking but truthfully my will wasn’t there. I feel this will be a good way to gradually start this journey. I have enjoyed reading the previous posts and hope to inspire someone else as I’ve been inspired. Wish me luck! Btw, you are beautiful!

  17. So I see you love the lunch drink – what’s your secret? I’m on Day 1 and I started drinking it around noon and it took until 4pm to finish it (given I was working a little in between)! It was very pulpy and separated. The breakfast juice was so smooth and velvety from the banana! Hopeing dinner is better! Here’s hoping I can finish it!

    1. haha – well yes, the lunch drink is pulpy but to me it most resembled whole food so I actually liked it. Also it tastes really summery and fresh. My lunch drink was REALLY big, so it lated me all afternoon. TO me the dinner drink was too thick because of the avacado, but I got use to it. Let me know how you like it 🙂 Luv, Brit

  18. Appreciating the hard work you put into your website and detailed information you offer.
It’s nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same
old rehashed material. Excellent read! I’ve bookmarked your site and I’m adding your RSS feeds to my Google account.

  19. Hi Brit!
I just happen to come across your blog because I was searching for an answer regarding a possible “typo” in the 3-Day Detox (DRINK VERSION). I read through all the questions and answers and nobody asked about this….which is making me believe that I am just not reading it correctly. Here is my confusion: In the dinner drink, it says “1 1/2 Coconut Water”. Is that supposed to say “1 1/2 CUP of coconut water”???? How much did you use (or anyone else out there can answer this)? I just want to make sure before I start it this weekend. Your help is greatly appreciated! 🙂

    1. Hey there! I believed I used 1.5 cups of water. So 1 + 1/2. The dinner drink is quite thick because of the avacado so you need the extra liquid to loosen the consistency. Good luck on your cleanse – be sure to let us know how it goes!

  20. Interesting reading. I am thinking about doing the cleansing. All new experience for me. Wondering if it will be ok for someone my age (59) versus you youngsters : )

  21. Hello! I just followed you on your blog, fb, Pinterest and YouTube! I loved reading your blog and when I went on YouTube, I was very excited with all the workouts you posted. I found you by searching Dr. Oz cleanse, I’m happy I did!

    1. Hey Tory! I’m so glad you found my blog. Hope you like my workouts and fitness tips too. PLEASE keep in touch with me – all the best to you! Lots of luv, Brit

  22. Hi, I am about to close out Day 1 of my cleanse and did search for others who tried it. I came across your blog and decided to drop a line. I absolutely hated the lunch drink. To the point where I could only get down half of it and I plan to drink the other half tomorrow. I didn’t leave the skin on the cucumber or the lime, so perhaps that would help with the taste. I will be sure to come back after day 3 to let you know how I did.

    1. congrats on getting through Day 1 Denise! So it’s official, I am the ONLY person who likes the lunch drink, lol. I had a similar experience with the lunch drink portion being very large, I actually drank have for lunch and have for my snack drink. I aslo do think keeping the skin on all of the fruits and veggies helps the taste – more importantly it provides more fiber and minerasl – so important for detoxing! Good luck on the next 2 days – can’t wait to hear about all of your success 🙂

  23. I started my cleanse this morning…I did not use the spinach for the morning because I only had Kale was that okay for my substitution. I will go buy spinach today…Also, do you think I should use lemon juice instead of a lemon.

    1. Good luck on the cleanse – for best results I recommend following the recipe exactly as stated on the 1-page guide. I used lemon, not lemon juice, and really liked the drink. Keep in touch on your progress 🙂 Lots of luv, Brit

      1. On my second day of cleanse it was hard for. I end up eating pistachios, but I still follow the cleanse…I hope eating nuts were not bad for my system.

  24. I’m extremely impressed along with your writing abilities and also with the format in your weblog. Is this a paid topic or did you modify it your self? Anyway stay up the excellent quality writing, it is rare to peer a great weblog like this one these days..

    1. Couldn’t agree more….when I did the 3 day detox Brit was brilliant with info and support. Its not that hard to do 3 days but I didn’t have a follow up plan. Im going to do it again and be prepared for afterwards this time, stick with the breakfast shake that’s no sacrifice as its so yummy, make sure I have salad and maybe rice crackers with tomato or salmon for lunch and a light meal at night…baking some fish in foil with a lemon slice is easy or some skinless chicken, some spinach, carrots, courgettes etc so I don’t feel deprived of solid food but its all healthy. I lost 1.8kg in three days but I think its all in the preparation for day 5 6 and 7 that keeps it off…so going to go again!! Luck and Love to you:)

    2. Thanks so much! No this is not paid writing, just a personal hobby. I love to share my health journey with others – it helps keep me accountable. Keep in touch!

  25. I was just curious if you kept up your regular lifting and exercise intensity during the three days. I want to do this but am not sure if I should could continue to my intense workouts or scale it back a bit.
    Thanks 🙂

    1. Hey Faith – yes actually I did and I felt great. Still had a good energy level. I think it’s because the drinks are so filling and full of fiber, protein and healthy fat. I didn’t feel weak or deprived at all. I taught my regular spin and kickboxing classes as well. Good luck! Luck me know how the cleanse goes for you!
